Most egress window jobs stop at the window itself. Get the opening cut, set the well, drop the window in, and call it done. That works fine if you don't care how the inside looks. We do.

On this one, we custom built the casing out of hemlock and used chair rail to tie it into the existing trim already in the basement. That detail matters more than people realize. A window that doesn't match the surrounding woodwork sticks out. It looks like an afterthought. Hemlock takes stain really well, which is exactly why it made sense here.

Here's the part we really liked about this job - the homeowner wanted to handle the staining and clear coat herself. So we built the casing, got everything fitted and square, and handed it off. She came back with a rich dark finish that pulled the whole thing together. That's the kind of collaboration that makes the end result feel like it actually belongs in the space.

Egress windows are a code requirement in most finished basement bedrooms, but that doesn't mean the finish work has to feel like a checkbox. The window brings in light and provides a safe exit. The trim work is what makes it look like part of your home. Both things matter, and we try to get both right.

We've done enough of these installs to know that the carpentry around the window is where a lot of contractors cut corners. We'd rather take the time to do it properly - because you're going to be looking at that trim for a long time.
